Who am I: A Dive into Identity

Uncategorized

Who am I? It’s the age-old question that even the greatest of philosophers have grappled with. As humans we are biologically driven by the need for connection and community.

Within these communities we can find ourselves looking around for similarities and differences compared to others. As we search, it may beg the question: ‘Who am I’? The answer to this seemingly simple question is anything but. Essentially the question is a matter of identity. What makes me, me? There are a myriad of factors that can determine the answer to this question and it will likely be different for every person.

What Factors Impact My Sense of Identity?

Factors that impact our sense of identity can usually be broken down into two categories: internal and external factors. Examples of external factors include family, culture, religion/spirituality, and media. We all have that favorite song that we turn up the volume when it comes across our Spotify. Next time you hear that song, listen to the message; not just the catchy tune. It is likely that the song speaks to some aspect of identity (relationships, career, personality).

Internal factors like your own values/beliefs, hobbies and life experiences also impact a sense of identity. It is important to note that previous experiences and hobbies are not who we are, but they do impact our identity and how we navigate the world around us.

Simba from The Lion King serves as an example of how life experiences can impact a sense of identity. Most of us know the story of Simba and how he eventually returned home to reclaim his place amongst his pride. However, it is the beginning of Simba’s story that was, perhaps, the most pivotal. Simba witnessed a terrible tragedy at a young age. Through the influence of a duplicitous uncle, Simba experienced an immense sense of guilt and shame–leading him to isolate. Eventually, Simba recognizes he can no longer escape the past and has to address the pain that caused him to hide. Despite what others said, the key to Simba’s future was not held in his past–but his past absolutely impacted his future. Now, reflect on your own story; your culture, experiences and values that have shaped you into the person you are.

Ways to Explore Different Aspects of Identity

  • Journaling–expressing your thoughts and feelings through journaling can be a powerful way to further explore aspects of your identity. Focus on recording a conscious stream of thought; refraining judgement about what comes to mind–just write! Notice the thoughts and emotions that you experience while journaling about identity.
  • Hobbies– finding activities that you’re interested in can be a fun way to discover different aspects of yourself. Think of a time where you tried a new activity or food that you did not expect to enjoy. Maybe you enjoyed that musical more than you thought? Challenge yourself by trying something new!
  • Culture–connecting to your sense of culture can be an important way to understand different aspects of your identity; what makes you, you! This can be explored through music, food, art and stories from previous generations.
  • Therapy– seeking individual counseling can be a powerful and impactful way to explore more about your identity. A trained therapist can help you to further process lived experiences, beliefs and values–all factors that play an important role in your identity. Therapy can provide a space where you feel comfortable to ask all the questions–even the uncomfortable ones.

Navigating differing aspects of identity can be challenging work. Identity work can also be a rewarding journey that helps to better understand yourself and how you navigate the world. The journey can be intimidating at times, but there is much to be gained from this ongoing process of self-discovery and reflection.
